Fresh Air

Sometimes you do everything you can to set up your sleep space to support your best sleep - and it still goes awry.

There was one time I was sleeping in a new-to-me-space. I was staying with a friend, in their condo. The guest room was welcoming but a little warm. I knew I'd like to sleep with fresh air and checking the weather saw that no rain was predicted. So after setting down my things I opened the window nice and wide. I exited the guest room and shut the door behind me so I wouldn't cool off the rest of the condo.

My friend and I spent the day together, returned late in the evening. We both remarked that the landscapers of the property must have put down fresh mulch because we could smell it. It's that kind of acrid fertilizer smell - like manure that isn't fresh - but not fully broken down either. It's not a pleasant smell.

Having not seen my friend in a long time, we stayed up past my normal bed time chatting. And I was so ready to get cozy in her spare bedroom and get a good night sleep. I said good night and opened the door to the room. Wafting out immediately was a wave of punjant mulch smell. The whole room was enveloped in what seemed like a thick layer of it. It was not inviting and it certainly wasn't cozy. I was happy with temperature of the room - but that smell - I needed nose plugs!!!!

I couldn't trouble my friend who was exhausted and off to bed too. So I got in my PJ's as fast as I could. Slammed the window shut, grabbed a blanket and pillow and made my way to her couch. It was too warm, and not very flat but at least I could breath for the night.

We laughed about it in the morning over breakfast, and I learned my lesson to always expect the unexpected when it comes to sleeping and travel!
